After the U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal nationwide in June, The Humanity Fund decided to celebrate by expanding its advocacy efforts. Stevens said the group is in the process of applying for permission to display Festivus poles at the capitols of New Hampshire and Texas and the nation’s capitol, and it plans to apply in California.
He said he set his sites on Arkansas after former Gov. Mike Huckabee took up the cause of Kim Davis, a county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
“That was revolting to me,” he said. ‘This is just a way to say hello to Mike Huckabee.”
Festivus, a secular holiday celebrated Dec. 23, originated with an episode of the television show “Seinfeld.” The name of The Humanity Fund is derived from The Human Fund, also a “Seinfeld” invention.
